Automated Attendance free essay sample
There are many cases in which it would be bene? cial for the University of Stellenbosch to be in possession of an automated class register system. Such a system would be of most value to students, who may make use of system reports and statistics to assess their own approach to their studies, and be kept informed about course material covered in classes attended and missed. An automated attendance recording system would be advantageous to the lecturer, by providing data on student attendances which may be correlated with a studentââ¬â¢s academic progress.Attendance recording is an important aspect of tests and exams, where a record must be kept of students writing the paper. Finally, such a system could provide evidence of a studentââ¬â¢s class attendance habits in cases where the University is accused by a student of providing insu? cient guidance in lectures. In such cases, the University holds no liability if it can be showed that the student was regularly absent from class. R. Gerber for the development of an automated class attendance recording device. The device must positively identify students and provide reliable class attendance logs for the bene? t of students, lecturers and the University, as described in the previous section.Attendance logs must be stored on a centralised database in order to generate reports and statistics. Therefore, the device must be able to communicate with a central database server. Students should be able to access information and personalized reports generated by the system for e? ective self-assessment and keeping up to date. Lecturers should be able to view attendance information and be able to add information to the system. The system should also provide appropriate administration interfaces for administering the recording devices and system parameters. à Scope and Aims of Project As part of the original project proposal, it was speci? ed that the student identi? cation device make use of RFID scanner technology, and that the device should be able to communicate via wireless with the central database server. As such, using an RFID scanner and wireless communications is part of the project scope, however alternatives to RFID and wireless communication is discussedThe scope of this project does not include an in-depth theoretical study on a particular subject. à Introduction to Other Chapters Chapter 2 speci? es the design process used, and states design limitations. It includes an analysis of the problem, the design process and a system level analysis. Chapter 3 and 4 contains detailed design considerations for all leaf-node components of this project, as de? ned in chapter 2 Chapter 5 contains testing and integration information. Chapter 6 contains recommendations and a conclusion to the project.Chapter 2 System Analysis and Design The design approach used in this project involves breaking the main system up into subsystems called ââ¬â¢branchesââ¬â¢. Each subsystem branch may be broken up further into subbranches, and subbranches may again be broken up into ââ¬â¢leaf-nodesââ¬â¢, which represent the lowest level of subsystems. This method forms a tree-like structure overview of the system as represented in ? gure . In this way, system level analysis and design is done by looking at the overlaying structure of the system, while detail design is limited to the leaf nodes. At the lowest level, components and design methods are chosen based on functional and non-functional requirements and design constraints. Once the lowest levels of sub-systems are designed, they are integrated and tested in a ââ¬â¢Bottom-upââ¬â¢ approach until all subsystem branches are combined into the all encompassing top-level system. In essence, a ââ¬â¢Top-Downââ¬â¢ analysis and design method with ââ¬â¢Bottom-Upââ¬â¢ integration and testing process is used. Figure ow-chart representation specifying the design approach used for this project, with inherent awareness of design constraints and limitations.Focusing on designing subsystems provides an advantage in that once one sub-systemââ¬â¢s design is completed, it may be sent in for manufacturing while design of the other subsystems can continue in parallel with manufacturing, which saves time. If one subsystem fails, it can be redesigned without in? uencing other sub-systems, and in this way valuable time is saved.

Robert Browning Essays (448 words) - Robert Browning,
Robert Browning B.J. Gilstrap English March 20, 1999 Biography of Robert Browning Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812, in Camberwell (a suburb of London), the first child of Robert and Sarah Anna Browning. His mother was a fervent and an accomplished pianist. Mr. Browning had angered his own father and forgone a fortune: the poet's grandfather had sent his son to oversee a West Indies sugar plantation, but the young man had found the institution of slavery so abhorrent that he gave up his prospects and returned home, to become a clerk in the Bank of England. On this very modest salary he was able to marry, raise a family, and to acquire a library of 6000 volumes. He was an exceedingly well-read man who could recreate the siege of Troy with the household chairs and tables for the benefit of his inquisitive son. Indeed, most of the poet's education came at home. He was an extremely bright child and a voracious reader and learned Latin, Greek, French and Italian by the time he was fourteen. He attended the University of London in 1828, the first year it opened, but left in discontent to pursue his own reading at his own pace. This somewhat distinctive but extensive education has led to difficulties for his readers: he did not always realize how obscure were his references and allusions. In 1845 he saw Elizabeth Barrett's poems and contrived to meet her. Although she was an invalid and very much under the control of a domineering father, the two married in September 1846 and a few days later eloped to Italy, where they lived until her death in 1861. The years in Florence were among the happiest for both of them. Her love for him was demonstrated in the Sonnets from the Portugese, and to her he dedicated Men and Women, which contains his best poetry. Public sympathy for him after her death (she was a much more popular poet during their lifetimes) surely helped the critical reception of his Collected Poems (1862) and Dramatis Personae (1863). The Ring and the Book (1868-9), based on an old yellow book which told of a Roman murder and trial, finally won him considerable popularity. He and Tennyson were now mentioned together as the foremost poets of the age. Although he lived and wrote actively for another twenty years, the late '60s were the peak of his career. His inf luence continued to grow, however, and finally lead to the founding of the Browning Society in 1881. He died in 1889, on the same day that his final volume of verse, Asolando, was published. He is buried in Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey. Poetry Essays

And Then There Was None by Agatha Christie essays
And Then There Was None by Agatha Christie essays Have you ever been in a dark, desolate room in complete seclusion from everyone else where you sense a presence nearby, but when you turn around, nobody's there? Have you ever been so afraid that you can't sleep at night? I believe that anyone who is an actual human being can agree with me that, in some way, everyone has felt some kind of fear and excitement due to a scary movie, book, or even reality. After reading this novel by Agatha Christie, And Then There Were None, I can honestly say that there is a book out there that can give me the shivers. Never have I been so afraid of a fictional - based story that I wasn't able to go to sleep that very same night I finished the novel. Not only did the plot of the story keep me on the edge of my seat, but the personalities and the secretiveness of the characters kept me in suspense as well. The novel takes place on Indian Island, a location known for publicity and curiosity, yet nobody knows for sure who owns this piece of land. In the beginning chapters of this book, you become familiar with the ten main characters who are out to spend an eight-day vacation on this secluded island with only a vague invitation with some variety on each one. The descriptions of each character are specified clearly, yet each holds a secret that they wouldn't dare to share with anyone else on the island. When the guests each arrive in their rooms, they find a riddle called "Ten Little Indians" which plays a significant role throughout the book, for this riddle tells the death of ten men on an island (ironic, eh?). By night time, they are all acquainted with each other, until a noise projecting from the wall tells a story about the guests and how they are all charged for a murder they could never be tried for. Now this book might somehow seem like an episode out of a "Clue" mysteryâ⠬âbut did "Clue" ever give you the chills you get on the back of your neck? No, I didn't think so! Suddenly, in the few ...

China and Japan Response to the West essays
China and Japan Response to the West essays From the period of 1750-1914, many non Western countries such as China, Japan, Russia, and the Middle East were feeling the pressure from the West to modernize and industrialize. While Japan was quite successful in modernizing and industrializing through the Meiji Restoration, China never fully understood the need to modernize and industrialize which cause it to lag behind Japan, especially economically. One similarity between China and Japans response to western imperialism was that both countries were forced to sign unequal treaties that would allow the West to trade with them. One difference in China and Japans response to Western imperialism was that Japan realized it had to westernize, modernize, and cooperate with the West which Japan reacted to through the Meiji Restoration. However, China did not fully realize the need to westernize and modernize and instead continued to fight with the West instead of cooperating with them and many Chinese reacted in an anti- foreign manner i n the Boxer Rebellion. One difference between China and Japans response to Western industrialization was that China never had an Industrial Revolution and never completed it since they rejected industrialization and they thought their economy was already thriving without it. However, Japan reacted by promoting industrialization and completing its Industrial Revolution. One similarity between China and Japans response to western imperialism was that both countries were forced to sign unequal treaties that would allow the West to trade with them. The Treaty of Nanjing in China and supplement treaties signed between the British and the Chinese were the first of the humiliating unequal treaties. It radically increased the openings for trade in China. The treaties opened five ports called Canton, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Linbou, and Shanghai to conduct foreign trade as treaty ports. Hong Kong was surrendered to the Britis...

Ethical considerations on intentional abortions research in United Paper
Ethical considerations on intentional abortions in United States - Research Paper Example à From a human female point of view, the research questions will be framed in a neutral way to avoid biased questions. Neutral questions will attract genuine answers. Moreover, the questionnaire will not require respondents to disclose their identities and this ensures confidentiality of the research. The reason is that women have different views on intentional abortion depending on the society they live in and their personal beliefs. The personal beliefs may be driven by their religious affiliations. For illustration, a Christian point of view towards life is that no one should kill as stipulated in Exodus 20:12. Other womenââ¬â¢s view on intentional termination views it as necessary in order to safeguard them from painful experiences that pregnancy sometimes brings along, disruption of education and employment. Other considerations are lack of support from the father and other reasons such as an inability to provide for the existing children. The above reasons are some of the ethical issues that women advance to have an intentional abortion. The moral Question with regard to whether abortion is the only way of family planning intentional abortions then arises. The research will also endeavor to frame questions in a neutral manner to avoid pro-choice and pro-life bias. Prochoice movement holds the view that the woman should be left with the choice of choosing whether to terminate or to retain the pregnancy. Unsafe abortions result in severe consequences such as infertility, injury, infections, and even death. Ã

It is important to win the cooperation of the opposing parties and the responsibility of the negotiator is to make steps that will persuade both parties to subject in an agreement (Chaiken, Gruefield, and Jude, 2000). Case study analysis in this report is organized by presenting the situation that is needed to be solved. It is important that the reason of the conflict, persons involve and attitude of the characters should be first considered before getting into any further analysis (Borissoff and Victor, 1989). The preceding discussion will be based on the findings in the analysis and relate it to the best approaches that should be done by the negotiator. A good negotiator should understand that resolving conflicts is so crucial and skills in communication and negotiation are the needed module for positive and favorable change. Generally speaking different people has different attitudes when it comes to conflict. However, it should be regarded that conflict whatever be the reason always fall into three dimensions: perception, feeling and action (Mayer, B., 2000). Chicago Fire in December,22,2010 Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Chicago Fire in December,22,2010 - Research Paper Example The fire is said to have been started by squatters burning debris to keep warm in the cold winter in a building whose utilities had been cut off. The fire is believed to have spread and caught the roof that was weighed down by snow and ice leading to its collapse on the firefighters on duty. The ensuing mishaps by the fire department, according to a federal report, are attributed to the tragic deaths and casualties that occurred during the firefighting exercise. According to the report, the firefighters sent into the vacant building had radios, yet their supervisors outside did not get to know the happenings inside: the buildingââ¬â¢s wooden pillars were letting the fire crawl up to the ceiling so fast. As a group of the fire fighters wrestled the fire from inside the building, another group was on the roof, cutting it up and spraying water on the fire. The cutting was supposed to allow smoke to escape, but it led to the roof collapsing, killing the two firefighters and injuring n ineteen more.à According to Tim Merinar, the lead federal investigator in the Chicago fire incident, the Fire Departmentââ¬â¢s supervisors ought to have taken a defensive approach in tackling the fire by ordering more firefighters to get out of the building after it was ascertained no persons were trapped inside, as had been previously feared on arrival at the scene. The report faulted the Fire Department for the deaths and injuries on the firefighters. Apparently, the department overlooked several things that ought to have been part of its strategy.
